“let’s put a pin in it”

“let’s put a pin in it…”

I’ve heard this phrase a few times these past few weeks, and have never noticed it before.

But what does it really mean?  I’ve understood it to be, “hold onto that thought/idea, we’ll come back to it” but with the connotation of “ummm… interesting idea, but let’s see what else we can come up with before we have to resort to that one.”

I thought it came from thumbtacking the idea to a bulletin board to remember it for later, but apparently it comes from WWII slang referring to putting a pin in the hand grenade, so you can “save it for later.”  Who would’ve thunk?
